Animal Abuse: Problems
_ There are two main types of abuse. The first type of animal abuse is
passive which can be defined as neglect or failing to take care or an
animal and keep it in good health and well-being. There are many things
such as failing to provide food and water, failing to provide adequate
shelter in extreme weather, or failing to provide medical attention/care
that can be classified as passive abuse. Abandonment or neglect is
another example of passive abuse (Animal 2011). Hoarding is when a
person has an abnormally large amount of pets in a small area. Hoarding
can cause malnutrition, starvation, and disease in the animals (Animal
2011).
The second type of animal abuse is active abuse which can be defined as an intentional act that causes injury or death to an animal. There are many things that can be classified as active abuse, such as torture, beating, mutilation, shooting. Confinement in which there is an inadequate amount of food, water, and/or fresh air can also be considered active abuse. Also blood sports such as cockfighting, bullfighting, and dog fighting can be classified as active abuse (Animal 2011).If a person were to hit their dog as an act of discipline this would be considered active abuse. Active abuse is one of the most disturbing types because of how graphical things could/can get (Animal 2011).
A place where a lot of people abuse animals are at circuses. You would think that the animals are so talented, but they are trained everyday and punished if they have done something wrong. They are physically punished by getting whipped and starved. All the fancy sparkling straps that are on the animals may look nice, but the straps are so tight that they leave marks on the animals. Elephants are the ones that are abuse the most because of how large and dangerous they are/can be. As you can see in the picture below the elephants are chained at their feet and not able to go anywhere. They are also kept in spaces that are way too small for a elephant to be in, because of that there are not a lot of many other elephants around them. In results, the animals suffer from social deprivation ("Home").
Body weight of an animal can say a lot which is why Purina created a system, (shown below), to help pet owners and investigators tell whether their pet is healthy or not. There are nine levels in this system but there are five that are used the most. 1.Emaciated is when an animals ribs, backbones, pelvic bones, and more can easily be seen from a distance. Also there is no visible body fat, and there is an obvious loss of muscle mass. 3. Thin is when an animals ribs are easily palpated and may be visible with no apparent fat (Animal 2011). Top of the backbone may be visible. Pelvic bones may become prominent. Also there will be an obvious waist and abdominal tuck. 5. Ideal is when an animals ribs are palpable without excess fat covering them (Animal 2011). The animals abdomen seems tucked up when viewed from side. 7. Heavy is when an animals ribs are palpable with difficulty and the animals has a heavy fat cover. There is noticeable fat deposits over the lumbar area and base of tail. the waist is absent or barely visible and the abdominal tuck may be absent (Animal 2011). 9. Grossly Obese is when an animals has a massive amount of fat deposits on the chest, spine, and at the base of the tail. The waist and abdominal tuck are completely absent. Also there are going to be fat deposits on the neck and legs and there is an obvious abdominal distension (Animal 2011).
Animal testing can cause animals stress, sterility and boredom which will then cause some animals to develop neurotic behaviors such constantly spinning in circles and rocking back and forth. Some animals might even begin pulling out their own hair and biting their own skin (Used 2011). The animals shake and cower in fear whenever someone walks past their cages and their blood pressure spikes drastically with ever step taken by the human. After enduring lives of pain, loneliness and terror, more than likely all of the animals will be killed (Used 2011). Animals should not have to go through pain for our pleasure.
Puppy mills are legal just like bullfighting and hunting but can still be classified as animal abuse; which is illegal. Puppies are kept in small wire cages with no heating or air conditioning. In the small wire cages puppies usually loose a paw or a leg due to the whole and sharp wires on the floor. The puppies receive no veterinary care what so ever which causes puppies to spread diseases rapidly (Puppy 2011). Dogs are killed once they are too old or too sick to reproduce. Once the dogs are killed their bodies are scattered through out fields and put in dumpsters (Puppy 2011).
